My First Virtual Console Game
November 28th, 2006
So, Super Star Solder, (originally for the TurboGraphx 16) came out on the Wii Virtual Console… oh… within the past hour or so I guess. So, I decided to trade in some hard earned cash for some virtual Wii points, which I then trade in for the rights to download the game. Wait… so… what’s the point of Wii points? Why can’t they just say the game costs $6? It can’t be that hard to convert prices for regions. ANYwho, after a glitch in the system (or a remote-o, or whatever a typo would be considered with the remote), I purchased my Wii points and just as quickly gave them back to download Super Star Soldier. I have played a solid 5 minutes of it, and can say I’m quite happy with my $6. Not quite as cheap as the BK games, and not quite the same graphics, but I’m a huge fan of the scrolling games. Now I won’t be stuck playing RaidenX anymore.
Graphics: 4/10
Not it’s shining feature. But it was definitely quality back in the day.
Sound: 8/10
Midi at it’s best. Unique sounds for each item. Explosions. And to top it off, a great soundtrack. It brings me back.
Controls: yes?
What do you want? You move, you shoot, you… move shields around you? Nothing spectacular, but the ability to use the remote (without classic controller addon) as a controller is sweet. Now to figure out why they decided to use the A and B buttons as rapid fire 1 and 2.
Replayability: 6/10
There’s 3 modes, the longest being story mode (although I don’t actually know how long it is since I haven’t made it past level 1 yet). And the other two being nothing more than a 2 and 5 minute rampage. But, with no coop mode, the fun is limited.
Overall: 7/10
Clearly the biggest hit is the graphics, but what do you expect from a game originally released 1990. Provides plenty of entertainment, and is a nice non-Nintendo release for the Virtual Console. If you’re into the Virtual Console, I highly recommend grabbing Super Star Soldier.
